Horse manure (HM) is generally considered to be one of the most abundant biogas sources. However, it is characterized by a low biodegradability, and hence the biogas production during anaerobic digestion is limited. This is often the reason why, even though a large fraction of HM is landfilled, a major fraction of the biogas potential is not utilized. It has been hypothesized that hydrogen sulfide has a negative effect on the anaerobic digestion of HM by reducing the bioavailable fraction of the organic matter. If this is the case, HM should be better digested in an environment with lower hydrogen sulfide concentration. In the present study, the effect of subcritical water (SCW) on the biogas production from HM was investigated. SCW is known to increase the biodegradability of solid wastes. If SCW is involved in the anaerobic digestion of HM, this should improve the methane production. Results show that biogas production increases significantly with increasing temperature. However, the effect of increasing temperature is different for SCW treated and non-SCW treated HM. When the anaerobic digestion was carried out with SCW-treated HM, a slight decrease of methane production was observed. This may be a result of an increase in the production of hydrogen sulfide. When the anaerobic digestion was carried out with non-SCW-treated HM, a significantly higher methane production was observed. This may be a result of the higher biodegradability of the organic matter in non-SCW-treated HM. This result indicates that the biogas production of HM can be improved by applying SCW treatment.package com.kingston.jforgame.server.base; import lombok.Data
